Shawn (my wonderful, and super supportive husband), has been on prednisone for the last 4 years, daily. He has to take this to keep his eczema from flaring up on his skin. He has gone to every kind of specialist and doctor, and has tried literally everything to help him….lotions, coconut oil, aloe, this drug, that drug, soaking, oatmeal baths, etc. etc. etc. The daily dose of prednisone has kept his skin perfect….BUT not without a large cost to Shawn.
On July 10th, he will be going in for surgery. A surgery to repair something a 75 year old would have a problem with, not a 33 year old. He has BIG TIME cataracts in both eyes. They are so bad, in fact, he can’t drive or see much out in daylight. He has been to 2 different doctors for opinions on what to do, and both doctors have said the cataracts are a direct result from the prednisone. GREAT! This is one of the many “consequences” of using the drug. What’s next!?!
Back in September of 2011, we met with a nutritionist about Shawn’s skin issue. (Our daughter Julia has eczema as well.) This was our “last ditch effort” to get him off of the 20ml of prednisone he took daily. She advised him to clean up his diet. Take out all grain (corn, soy, wheat, and rice) and dairy. This seemed VERY difficult to do at first, and I will go into that on another post…. Anyways, we wanted to try this because he wanted to get off the prednisone, so we jumped right in!
Within a month of “clean eating” he was able to cut back his daily dose to 15ml per day! YEAH! Slowly, he cut back….10ml, 5ml. Anyways, as of today, he is taking only 5ml every other day! WHOOP WHOOP!
I always joke with him that he is “getting cataract surgery, because of the prednisone he takes to control his skin, because of the allergy to the food he eats, because of all the crap ‘they’ put in the food….” It’s a cycle. And WE will stop it for our family!
Who would’ve thought the “cure” for Shawn was to eat more fruits, veggies, and grilled meat!? Sounds good to me! 🙂
